A heady start to 2014: champagne

I started the year as I mean to go on – with champagne.

At New Year, of course, it’s a must, whether you’re a Francophile or not.

My champagne of choice would be Pommery, but, to be honest, Sainsbury’s had a deal on Piper Heidsieck. Two bottles of it cost me about the same as one bottle of Pommery would have.

A no brainer, to use the vernacular.

I wanted champagne specifically, rather than cava or prosecco, to take to a New Year’s Eve party last night. It was hosted by my cousin’s girlfriend and I was looking to make a good impression. I don’t know either my cousin, Kevin, or his girlfriend, Paula, very well – or as well as I’d like to. That’s despite the fact that Paula only lives in Hove, just a couple of miles from my home in Brighton.

I figured champagne would be gratefully received – and so it was. They put it by for when the clock struck midnight.

As a result of the evening, I got to know both Kevin and Paula a bit better. Plus, I met some of their friends – all of whom were completely charming. My partner and I even got a dinner invitation from one couple. I look forward to that already.

All in all, a good start to my year in Périgord, Paris… and, er, Piper Heidsieck.

  1. Do you know Canard-Duchêne? It is my favorite in the “affordable” category. One price category up, and I choose Ruinart 🙂

  2. Those are both names I recognise. I’ll keep an eye out. Thanks for the tip!
