A right mouthful: recipe for success

Learning a foreign language is so much more fun if you get something tangible at the end of it. Or at least that’s what I tell my partner as he works his way through a recipe book written in French.

The book in question is the rather stylish Délice de nos Régions – a collection of 125 classic or revisited recipes. We picked a copy when we were in Normandy in January.

It’s like a gastronomic tour of France in 264 pages.

Last Sunday, he served panna cotta au caramel au beurre salé – salted caramel panna cotta – to friends at the end of a long and languorous Sunday lunch. According to the book’s editors, the dish takes its inspiration from Brittany – presumably from the salt marshes of Guérande (now officially part of the Loire-Atlantique, thanks to regional reorganisation).

The dessert went down a treat.

Trouble is, if he continues to learn French this way, I’m not sure which will grow faster: his vocabulary or my waistline.
