Out of the blue: Banlieues Bleues

Venturing beyond Paris’ Périphérique ring-road has rarely been as appealing as it is now. Today marks the start of this year’s Banlieues Bleues festival – a celebration of jazz and blues.

For the next four weeks, Pantin, in suburban Seine-Saint-Denis, will host the event.

It brings together both famous names and emerging talent from the world of jazz and blues. Big names to have appeared at the festival over the years include Miles Davis, Miriam Makeba, Nina Simone and Ray Charles.

This is the 31st time the Banlieues Bleues festival has taken place. It is being held on the eastern fringe of the capital in a converted bag factory, which has a new concert hall attached.

As well as live concerts, there are a series of workshops, masterclasses and projects going on, appealing to professionals and amateurs alike.

So, if jazz and blues are your thing, Paris’ suburbs are where you should be. Mmmm, nice.
