À la mode: retail therapy

At last, a festival I really want to go to: one with glamour, sunshine and lots of opportunities to rub shoulders – or, at least, shoulderpads – with the rich and famous. Yes, le Cannes Shopping Festival starts today.

Whatever you’re looking for – from high-street fashion to haute couture, from accessories to swimwear – it’s all there on France’s Côte d’Azur this weekend.

The festivities kick off at 8 o’clock tonight with a catwalk show by Galeries Lafayette, my favourite French department store. Its flagship store on Boulevard Hausmann in Paris is a sight to behold.

It now also has over 60 branches across France and as far afield as Beijing, Dubai and New York. I always make a point of popping in whenever I see one. In addition to the Paris store, Agen, Bordeaux, Limoges, Reims, Rennes, Rouen and Toulouse have all benefited from my custom over the years.

If that’s any indication of what to expect from the festival, I wish I could be on a flight heading south today.

It’s not that I’m a snob when it comes to shopping – I’m not. I’m just as happy rummaging through the rails in Devred or wandering the aisles of an Intermarché.
