Purple haze: jazz in Bergerac

Today marks the start of a month-long jazz festival in my adopted French hometown of Bergerac. With support from the city council, the Jazz Pourpre Périgord festival is much bigger than ever before.

This year, the city’s arts festival has been given over completely to jazz instead.

The organisers, the Jazz Pourpre Association, have run a smaller scale event in the city since 2003. Last year its tenth anniversary programme caught the imagination of local councillors who have given the festival their complete backing this year.

What they liked was the creation of a ‘village’ given over to jazz in the centre of the city.

This year, organisers have taken that idea one step further. Local villages, such as Queyssac and Saint-Pierre d’Eyraud, will each host Saturday night shows during the month.

The culmination of the Jazz Pourpre Périgord festival will be shows by renowned performers Thomas Enhco, Julien Brunetaud, Laurent de Wilde and Géraldine Laurent, and Cécile McLorin Salvant.

Although I’m more of a pop and soul fan myself, the festival has me hankering to return to Bergerac. Three months from tomorrow, I’ll be there…
