We can work it out: get lucky

Unless my numbers come up on tonight’s EuroMillions, work looks likely to be part of the reality of any move to France. But with unemployment currently running at ten per cent, competition is likely to be fierce in the job market.

All the advice seems to suggest going self-employed – and this month’s French Property News provides plenty of food for thought.

The latest issue has given over no less than 24 pages to the subject of how to earn a living in France. First off, it covers the obvious option of running a gîte business – a popular choice with many aspiring expats. Chambres d’hôtes fall under the same heading. There are plenty of tips on how to find the right one for a new life overseas.

Campsites, restaurants and hotels are the logical extension of that idea – all of which benefit from France’s position as the most visited country in the world.

But there are plenty of other possibilities too, from running a café to owning a vineyard.

Less obvious options include managing a kennels and cattery – and the magazine features one that is currently on the market in Lot. There’s also a hairdresser’s in Val-de-Marne.

Other ideas include opening a franchise – a branch of an already successful business. The example of a British couple who have set up a cycle-hire franchise in the Gorges du Tarn is given as an example.

I suspect that, like me, a fair proportion of the magazine’s readers are middle-aged Brits looking for a new challenge. Many of us are not willing, ready or able to retire just yet. A plan, heaps of determination and some sound advice may be all we need.

Well, that and a big win tonight.
