Open doors: open mind

I’m never happier than when I’m flicking through the latest issue of French Property News – unless I’m poring over someone’s actual home, that is. The June issue of the magazine hits the shops today and my excitement is almost as feverish as when I go visiting open houses during the Brighton festival.

Artists open their doors every Saturday and Sunday throughout May as part of the annual festival.

My partner and I always make a point of going. He enjoys the art, while I like to critique the artists’ choice of pedestal mat, scatter cushions and table ware.

It’s a pity I can’t do the same with some of the homes in this month’s magazine. There’s a rather attractive stone house with a heated swimming pool, in a village near Puy l’Éveque in Lot, for example. As well as the house itself, there’s a gîte and a studio, as well as views over a valley – and all for €246,000.

On the other hand, maybe it’s just as well. For the time being I’m not in a position to move, so I wouldn’t want to waste people’s time by viewing their home.

As for the festival, well, there’s always a chance I might buy one of the paintings or sculptures…
