Mad for it: Francofolies

Today marks the start of the 30th annual Francofolies music festival in La Rochelle. For me, one of the highlights of this year’s line-up is raucous redhead Zaz.

She will take to the stage tomorrow evening as part of the five-day celebration of French-language music.

Born in Tours, Zaz showed a gift for music from an early age, and at just five, her parents enrolled her in Tours’ music conservatory.

She put in 25 years’ hard work before finally hitting it big in 2010 with the song Je Veux. It became a chart hit and was later voted song of the year on TF1.

Personally, I’ve always preferred the highly catchy On Ira, from her second album, Recto Verso, issued last year. That’s the one I would be calling out for if I were there at Les Francofolies de la Rochelle.

Sadly, I can’t get over to France for another three weeks. I guess I’ll have to make do with singing along to the song in the car as I commute to work in the meantime.
