Antici: pation

Sometimes only champagne will do. Last night was one of those nights. Nothing beats a glass of fizz when you have something to celebrate.

We had arranged to have dinner with a few friends. We’d booked a table in a restaurant that none of us had been to before – the Coalshed, in the Lanes area of Brighton – and we met beforehand for an aperitif.

Hotel du Vin, just down the road, was our venue of choice. With its dark floorboards, soft lighting and comfortable chairs, it has a classy, gentleman’s club ambiance.

The evening was the final leg of Damon’s birthday celebrations, and we ordered champagne.

Among the group were Colin and Michael. The last time we saw them was when we stayed at their house in Pas-de-Calais in June. Since then, they have spent a lot of time in France – and so, of course, have we.

However, that wasn’t the only coincidence of the night.

Colin and I have both been shortlisted for European Diversity Awards – in different categories, thankfully. Mine is for the work done by the group I chair at work in support of our lesbian and gay staff, customers and contractors. Colin’s is for a talent programme he’s introduced at work.

We’ll find out in October if either of us has won.

The Coalshed turned out to be terrific – but it won’t compare to the venue for the awards ceremony: the dinosaur hall at the Natural History Museum.

Hopefully that night we will have two good reasons to open some more champagne…
