Snails in garlic butter

Snail trail: payback time

Revenge is a dish best served hot – with plenty of garlic butter and a baguette on the side. That’s what I learned at the weekend. I’ve paid back our Korean lodger for introducing us to kimchi by serving him snails. Does that make me a bad person?

Kimchi is almost Korea’s national dish. However, cabbage pickled with chilli spices isn’t to everybody’s taste. I appreciated the gesture from Seunghwan, though I could take or leave his food.

So when we invited his girlfriend to join us for dinner on Sunday night, I decided to offer classic snails in garlic butter for our starter – served in their shells, of course.

I thought it might bring back memories of their recent trip to Paris. Seunghwan had been trying to woo Hee-Kyung for a few months, without success. Then he came up with a plan to take her to Paris, Venice and Florence – 3 of the world’s most romantic cities.

They returned last week. Suffice to say, his ploy worked.

She is absolutely lovely and I can understand why he’s quite so smitten. Now, however, I have to work out what to serve them next time she comes over. Andouillettes? Foie gras?
