Champs de Gain, Saint-Georges-lès-Baillargeaux, Vienne, France

Come back and stay: Champ de Gain

I’m with Paul Young. Wherever he lays his hat, that’s his home – that was what he claimed in the 1980s and I reckon his thinking still holds. Last night, I laid my driving cap at the Champ de Gain in Saint-Georges-lès-Baillargeaux and quickly felt right at home.

Situated in the département of Vienne, just north of Poitiers, this charming chambres d’hôte was our stopover last night. We’re on our way from Dieppe to Castillonnès, in Lot-et-Garonne.

It was another great find from the Gîtes de France network.

That’s not to say that everything about the Gîtes de France is great. Their website is hard to use for starters. And their booking system is older than many of the holiday lets they advertise. However, when all is said and done, their gîtes are first rate.

Take the Champ de Gain, for example. The main house is a former winery from the 19th century. Its owners, Sylvie and Léopold Brugerolle, remodelled its Petit Logis nearly ten years ago. The building dates back to the 1600s, and the couple have tried to keep its style authentic.

For us it is not just the king size four-poster bed that is perfect, but also the outside space. On a warm summer’s evening, it was good to be sat out with a simple meal of bread, cheese, cold meats and wine.

Now, this morning, we are fully refreshed – and ready for our trip another 285km further south.

Castillonnès, here we come.
