Martin and Trevor at Plateau, Brighton

Nothing flat about this: Plateau

Our duty is done. We went to our fourth and final wedding of the summer on Friday – and what a great day it was. Martin and Trevor are the ideal couple, and Plateau, the French restaurant-cum-wine bar in Brighton they’d chosen for lunch afterwards, was perfect too.

We count Martin (pictured right) and Trevor (left) as good friends. We call them ‘the chaps’, they call us ‘the boys’.

They got hitched at Brighton Town Hall at midday and, after the ceremony, we headed across the road to Plateau.

Plateau’s USP is that it offers a range of sharing plates – hence the name. It also serves more French wines than anywhere else in Brighton. Their wine list is very extensive, including plenty of wines from our second home – the south west of France – such as Bergerac and Cahors.

We’ve been there several times. A couple of weeks ago, the tapas-style artichoke heart and Barkham Blue cheese foam blew us away. On Friday, the guests all tucked in greedily to the delicious meat, fish and vegetarian sharing plates. Yum!

After lunch, we were bussed a few miles up the road to Lewes for the reception. It was held at Pelham House, a manor house from the 1600s. The building was used as an office by East Sussex County Council for much of the 20th century, though you’d never guess it now.

The evening raced by – helped along by more food, fizz and dancefloor fillers courtesy of the likes of Diana Ross, Gina G and Kylie. (It was a gay wedding, after all.)

Damon and I booked ourselves a room for the night – and got a free upgrade. That’s because it was Damon’s birthday on Friday. Tactfully, he kept quiet about it, so he didn’t upstage the grooms.

So, all in all, it really was a day of celebrations.
